Retail packaging for expansive ranges of product requires both brand shelf impact and a positive experience for consumers. The Zenith bolts range received a make-over to improve ease of product selection and provide a simplified user experience across the range. We created conceptual designs for the relaunch of the range for submission to retailers. The main selling points were that the new boxes were easier to identify and finding the exact bolt required for a job was made easier. This was a winning strategy for the fastener category of hardware retailers.

Packaging that helps navigate the range

The Zenith bulk bolts range spans across 17 different types of boxes – 4 colours for 4 finishes across 20 sizes combined with over 320 individual labels for all product variants. Adopting common boxes within the range translates to cost saving and a more sustainable outcome. Stronger use of colour on labels makes it easier to see the difference between similar products and avoid errors in purchasing.

Colour Code hierarchy

The strong colour block down the Zenith bolts aisle according to the 4 finishes available – Galvanised, Black Galvanised, Zinc and Stainless Steel draws customers straight to the section they need. This is achieved with bold coloured boxes. However, it was found that customers required assurance that they had chosen a finish that is fit for purpose, so we created an easy to follow Corrosion Protection Rating selection guide on the side of each box that highlights the best use for the finish.

The hierarchy of colour code goes from primary colour code for finish (blue for Galvanised, grey for Zinc, red for Stainless Steel and white for Black Galvanised) to secondary colour coding per type of bolt on the box label. The intuitive colour-coded labels help customers choose the correct type of bolt required, such as coach, hex, cup, as well as complimentary nuts or washers.

Packaging with visual cues

Visual identification of a particular bolt amongst over 300 in a range can be reassuring, especially for DIY end users. Each Bulk Bolt pack includes a render of the product on front of pack and a 1:1 illustration on the top that can be used confidently to choose a product to match your existing bolt.

Product Range Expansion

The “bulk box” packaging design was applied to the “pre-pack” range of smaller quantity bolts. This is an initiative by the brand and retailer to reduce the pilferage and product mix-ups that commonly occur when individual bolts are sold as loose items in bulk bin trays.
