The 1950’s had a global population of 2.5 billion who produced 1.5 million tons of plastic, in 2016 with 7 billion people, we produced 320 million tons of plastics. That’s a massive increase of 75x more plastic produced per person. Shockingly, this is predicted to double by 2034!

To help fix this staggering problem, Australia established the 2025 National Packaging Targets to create a sustainable way for how we manage packaging in Australia. The four targets, to be achieved by 2025, are:

  • 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging
  • 70% of plastic packaging being recycled or composted
  • 30% of average recycled content included in packaging
  • The phase out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastics packaging.

There are many steps to Delivering the 2025 Targets including consumer engagement, recycling programmes and packaging design.

Design is step one in creating more sustainable packaging. Design covers an array of aspects that include communication with the end user, communication with recycling facilities and the material of the packaging itself.
